Booth Spray Tan vs. Custom Airbrush: Why They Look (and Fade) So Differently
If you’ve ever walked out of a spray tan appointment orange, patchy, or smelling like something you can’t name, we need to talk. Because that experience? It wasn’t “spray tans.” It was the kind of spray tan you got.
Here on the Treasure Coast you have two very different options that get called the same thing: the automated booth and the custom airbrush tan. They are not the same service. Not even close. Here’s the education no one gives you before you book.
What a Booth Actually Does
A booth is a machine. You stand in it, it sprays, you leave. Fast, standardized, and identical for every single person who steps inside that day.
Same solution. Same depth. Same spray pattern. Whether your skin runs warm or cool, olive or fair, dry or oily, the machine doesn’t know and can’t adjust.
That’s the whole problem. Because your undertone is what decides whether a solution reads golden bronze on you or… orange. When everyone gets the same formula, somebody is always the wrong match. Sometimes that somebody is you.
There’s a shelf-life issue too. High-volume locations buy solution in bulk, and spray tan solution is a fresh product. When it oxidizes it shifts color, develops that infamous smell, and fades in patches instead of melting off evenly. If you’ve ever seen a tan look “off” on your skin by day two, that’s often what happened.
What Custom Airbrush Actually Means
A custom airbrush tan is applied by hand, by a trained artist, after an actual consultation.
At The Glow Haven, every appointment starts with your skin: your undertone, your natural depth, your event, your timeline, and what your skin needs that day. Then your solution is custom-blended to match. Applied by hand, angle by angle, so wrists, ankles, hands, and face get finesse instead of a fixed nozzle blast.
That’s why no two Glow Haven tans look alike. Because no two clients are alike.
And it’s why the industry is moving our way: 88% of sunless clients now say they want a natural-looking glow over a dark one. Natural is custom. A machine can’t do custom.
The Fade Test
Here’s the part most people never hear: a good tan isn’t judged on day one. It’s judged on day five, six, seven.
A mismatched or aging solution fades in patches. It clings to dry spots, breaks up around the neck and wrists, and gets scrubbed off in shame by day four.
A custom-blended, hydration-focused tan fades the way it developed: evenly, softly, like your natural color slowly stepping back. Your tan should look flawless on day seven, not just day one. That’s the standard we hold every appointment to.
Questions to Ask Before You Book Anywhere
We’d rather make you a smart client than a scared one. Wherever you book, ask:
Will my color be matched to my undertone? If the answer is a numbered “level” instead of a conversation about your skin, that’s a machine menu, not a match.
How fresh is the solution? A pro should be able to tell you what they spray, why they chose it, and when it arrived.
What happens at my wrists, hands, and hairline? These are the detail zones where booths streak and artists blend.
What’s my rinse timing? Your first rinse window changes with your plans, your skin, and your solution. If nobody asks about your schedule, nobody’s customizing anything.
What should I do before and after? Prep and aftercare decide half of your result. Real guidance is part of a real service.
