Getting Your First Custom Spray Tan: What to Expect & How to Prepare
Getting Your First Custom Spray Tan: What to Expect, What to Prepare, and Why It's Nothing Like You Think
If you've been thinking about getting a spray tan for basically two summers now and haven't actually done it…
This one's for you.
Maybe you had a bad experience years ago and swore them off. Maybe you've seen the horror stories online. Maybe you're just nervous about showing up and not knowing what to do or what to say or whether you'll walk out looking like you fell into a bag of Cheetos.
All of those hesitations are valid.
And most of them come from the same place: a spray tan experience that wasn't customized.
Here's what a first-time appointment at The Glow Haven actually looks like — from the prep you do beforehand to the moment you look in the mirror after.
Why "First-Timer" Is Actually a Compliment Here
I'll say this up front: first-time clients are some of my favorite appointments.
Not because they're easier. Because there's nothing to undo.
When someone comes in who's never had a custom spray tan before, we get to start fresh. No old formula assumptions. No bad habits from a booth tan. Just your actual skin, your actual goals, and a formula built entirely around those 2 things.
If you've had a bad spray tan before, that's actually useful information. It tells me exactly what we're working against and what to avoid.
Either way… this appointment is yours from scratch.
How to Prepare Your Skin Before Your Appointment
The prep you do 24–48 hours before matters more than most people realize. Here's exactly what to do:
Exfoliate. The day before your appointment (not the morning of), use a gentle physical scrub or exfoliating mitt on your body. Pay attention to dry, rough spots: knees, elbows, ankles, heels. These areas hold more color and can go darker without prep. You want a smooth, even canvas — not because spray tans are picky, but because they amplify what's already there.
Shave. Do this at least 24 hours before your appointment, not the same morning. Freshly shaved skin has open pores and a slightly roughed-up surface that can grab formula unevenly. A day of recovery time makes a real difference.
Come in clean, dry skin. No lotion, no body oil, no deodorant, no fragrance on the skin. These create a barrier between the formula and your skin and affect how the color develops. A clean, product-free surface is what lets the formula actually bond.
Skip the workout. Sweat right before an appointment can do the same thing as lotion — it creates a barrier. Come in dry and clean.
Wear or bring dark, loose clothing. You'll want something you don't mind the formula touching for the first few hours. Flowy works better than tight. Dark over light.
What Happens During Your Appointment
The consultation comes first.
Before I mix anything, we talk. Your skin is your largest organ… and a lot affects it. What formula is right for you depends on things you might not have thought to mention — so I ask.
Here's what I want to know:
Your natural skin tone and undertones (warm, cool, or neutral)
How dry or oily your skin typically runs
Whether you've used self-tanner recently and what it did
How much sun exposure you've been getting
How often you shave
What you're tanning for
How deep you want to go — a subtle warmth or a full vacation glow
Whether you have any skin sensitivities or allergies
None of those questions have wrong answers. They're just information. The more I know, the better I can build your formula.
This is what "custom" actually means. Not picking a number on a shade chart. Mixing a formula that was made for your specific skin, your specific undertones, your specific lifestyle.
Then the application.
The actual spray tan takes 15–20 minutes. You'll stand in a relaxed position while I apply the formula with a professional airbrush system. It's a fine, even mist — not like a paint gun, not like anything uncomfortable. Most clients say it feels like a very light spray of water.
The whole appointment is 20–30 minutes from the time I arrive to the time I pack up.
Your first rinse timing.
After your appointment, you'll have a specific rinse time — usually somewhere in the 6–12 hour window depending on your formula and development choice. I'll tell you exactly when, and I'll send you aftercare instructions so you're not guessing.
The first rinse is just water — no soap. That brown water you see running off? That's the surface bronzer washing out. Your actual color is underneath and continues to develop for several more hours. It'll be lighter right after your rinse and then deepen again.
The Questions First-Timers Always Ask
"Is it going to smell weird?"
Modern premium solutions don't have the harsh biscuity smell older spray tans were notorious for. Some formulas have a very light, neutral scent during development. By your first rinse, it's essentially gone.
"What if I hate the color?"
This is why the consultation matters. We talk through your depth preference before I mix anything. If you've never had a custom spray tan before, I'll often recommend starting at a natural, buildable depth — something that looks like you've been in the sun, not like you've been somewhere tropical for a month. You can always go deeper next time. You can't go lighter once it's on.
"What if it turns orange?"
Orange happens when a warm-toned formula is applied to a cool-toned or neutral person. Or when the concentration is too high for someone's skin. Or when there's no consultation and the technician is just using one formula for every single client.
A formula matched to your undertones doesn't turn orange.
This is the thing that changes every first-timer's mind. When you look in the mirror and the color is warm and natural and just looks like you got some sun… it's nothing like what you were expecting.
"What if it's awkward?"
It's genuinely not. You're in your own space, in your own home. I'm a professional and I've done this hundreds of times. We usually end up talking the whole appointment. Most clients say it feels like having a friend come over who happens to do spray tans.
That's kind of the point.
"How long will it last?"
With good prep and aftercare, a custom tan holds 7–10 days. It fades gradually and evenly — not patchy or orange-edged. A tan that "fades pretty" is one of the markers of a well-formulated, well-applied custom tan.
Skin needs change over time too: Hormones. Seasons. Travel. Stress. Shaving frequency. Florida summers. This is why every appointment includes a fresh consultation — even for returning clients.
Why Mobile Actually Makes Your First Time Easier
One of the biggest reasons first-timers have a better experience here than at a salon or booth is location.
You're in your own space.
You know where everything is. You can put on your robe or your old swimsuit and just exist in your own home without any of the "what do I do here" energy that comes with a new salon. There's no waiting room. No checking in at a front desk. No trying to figure out the right lighting in a booth.
I come to you. I set up. We talk. I leave.
And then you go about your day in your own home, which is the best possible environment for a spray tan to develop.
No driving. No waiting. No awkward salon energy. Just your house and a result you're going to love.
What First-Timers Say After
I've heard a version of this so many times I could write it in my sleep:
"I didn't think I was going to like it but I actually love it."
And then they look in the mirror a second time.
And then they text me before I'm even back in my car to ask when they can book again.
That's the thing about a custom spray tan done right. It doesn't look like a spray tan. It looks like you — just a little warmer, a little more alive, a little more put-together. The kind of thing people notice but can't quite name.
That's the goal every single time.

The Standard We're Raising at THE GLOW HAVEN™
The spray tan industry has a reputation. Most studios are still running clients through a booth or using one formula for every person who walks in the door. No consultation. No undertone matching. No aftercare guidance. You get sprayed and you leave and you wonder why it looked nothing like what you wanted.
That's the experience that's made so many women write off spray tans entirely.
We built The Glow Haven because that experience wasn't good enough… and it shouldn't have been the standard in the first place.
Your skin tone, undertones, dryness level, lifestyle, and desired depth all matter here. Every. Single. Time.
As women, a lot affects our skin throughout our lifetime. Hormones. Seasons. Travel. Stress. Sun exposure. Shaving. Dry climate. Florida summers. Your skin in July is not your skin in October. And neither should your spray tan formula be.
That's why we're not just doing spray tans…we're raising the standard for them.
Welcome to THE GLOW HAVEN™. We can't wait to give you the kind of spray tan experience you thought didn't exist.
